We are celebrating the Centennial of Petroleum Engineering being offered here at the University of Wyoming. We have the event scheduled for the Marian H. Rochelle Center for May 8, 2026 at 6 pm. The AADE/IADC student chapters have provided an open bar, silent auction, as well as raffle for a 45-70 Rossi Lever action rifle, and two custom 50 qt Wyld gear coolers!
In 1925, D.B. Dow, of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, wrote to Dr. Arthur G. Crane, the President of the University of Wyoming, outlining the need for petroleum engineering courses at the University of Wyoming (UW). His letter urges that given Wyoming's abundance and rapid growth in this industry, that the state, and country, needed more engineers with training in petroleum engineering. The letter outlined that the boom in recent years of oil and gas production was due in part to the increaseof petroleum engineers and petroleum chemists stepping into the Wyoming oil patch. D.B. Dow further elaborated that UW’s close proximity to Wyoming’s oilfields and refineries made it a competitive location to offer these courses and training then other school locations; "In the teaching of petroleum engineering it is very necessary for students to make field studies, consequently, the location of the school with respect to oil fields and refiners is of great importance". In 1926, at President Cranes instruction, the first petroleum engineering class was offered at UW; “Petroleum Engineering 101, Oil production Methods,” which was instructed by Mr. Guiteras. This class covered everything from production, drilling, equipment, completions, and well interventions. Now, 100 years later, the tradition of petroleum engineering at UW has never been stronger; graduating engineers to oilfields across Wyoming, America, and the globe. To celebrate this centennial, we'd like to invite alumni, industry, and students to mark this once in a lifetime occasion.
This is a student ran event, led by the student chapters of the American Association of Drilling Engineers, and International Association of Drilling Contractors; we are also looking for sponsors to help present this event, with four tiers that include opportunities such as tables, award presentations to Students, and your company's logo or name on our promotional material, and more. We also have the system worked out with the UW Foundation, so you the sponsorship is considered as a donation for tax purposes. The sponsorship form is attached below:
